The Faculty of Physics and Earth Sciences at the University of Leipzig seeks to fill the following junior professorship, funded by the Tenure Track Programme of the German Federal Government and the Federal States, from 1 October 2021:

Junior Professorship in Applied Near-Surface Geophysics and Remote Sensing
(W1 with tenure track leading to W2)

The successful candidate will have an outstanding research record in the analysis of terrestrial transformation processes on human-relevant timescales. The position focuses on near-surface geophysics in relation to recent and past environmental, geological, geomorphological, hydrological or anthropogenic processes.

The appointee will combine ground truth data with advanced and innovative geophysical and remote-sensing methods. These methods include ground-penetrating radar, ERT (electrical resistivity tomography), nearsurface seismic techniques, magnetic prospection, direct push sensing, SAR (synthetic-aperture radar), LiDAR, as well as structure from motion or other UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) based 3D remote sensing techniques. Combinations of novel observational methods and state-of-the-art methods in data driven modelling are desired. The research focus of the junior professorship will preferably be in the context of geophysical and 3D remote sensing methods for climate impact research, analysis of natural hazards or the detection of anthropogenic forcing mechanisms. The junior professorship will complement the scientific and methodological issues of the existing professorships in Physical Geography, Geoinformatics and Remote Sensing, Modelling Approaches in Remote Sensing, Remote Sensing in Geo- and Ecosystem Research and Remote Sensing of the Water Cycle in the Earth System, and form interfaces to these in research and teaching. The research topics of the professorship are intended to provide potential links to the faculty’s joint research initiatives with the involvement of Unibund and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ).Expertise in these fields will be demonstrated by the candidate’s publication record and preferably a record of successful acquisition of external funding. Contributions to the Remote Sensing Centre for Earth System Research, a novel joint research initiative of Leipzig University and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), are desired. The successful candidate will actively participate in the study programmes at the Faculty of Physics and Earth Sciences at Leipzig University. Teaching contributions will be in BSc and MSc courses in solid Earth, environmental geophysics, and remote sensing. Participation in academic selfgovernance is mandatory.

The tenure track professorship is considered a position for early career researchers. Therefore, the call is addressed to applicants with a completed doctoral degree, attributed with magna cum laude or higher, who seek further qualification and have not yet completed a habilitation. If applicants were employed as research associates or research assistants prior to or during the completion of their doctoral studies, the total period of employment and work on the doctoral thesis should not exceed six years (exceptions for child care times apply). Applicants should have changed universities after completing their doctorate or have been academically active outside the Leipzig University for at least two years. They should have completed their doctorate no more than four years ago.
